Hot Shots

Hotshots—those specially trained firefighters who battle raging wildfires—are heroes, as proven by this volume in the Fire Fight! The Bravest series. Kids will be fascinated by the danger these men and women overcome and might even fantasize about following in their courageous footsteps. But, as Goldish writes, this is an occupation fraught with extreme peril. He describes the harsh conditions and explains how they place themselves in harm’s way on a continuing basis. All hotshots undergo extensive, rigorous training and testing, and while the deadly 2013 Yarnell, Arizona, fire brought attention to this specialized occupation, these teams have been battling wildfires for decades. Combining photographs of hotshots in action, charts, diagrams, and well-written and accessible text (with unfamiliar terms in bold and defined in the glossary), this should have broad reader appeal.
